One of the most memorable experiences was that trip to Trapani to take in the conference on the Sicilian origins of the Odyssey. This was no idle conference of academic gabble; this was a happening. What happened was a swirl, a veritable whirlwind of poetry, fellowship, and good time. At the eye of this beneficent typhoon was Nat Scammacca, poet, individual, and doer. He was all about, herding his broad flock of poets into their properly somewhat disorganized readings and giving the gathering that quantum movement that keeps poetry on the go. We particularly remember the outing up Erice, where Nat saw fit to poeticize his translation of the mayor's political words of welcome into what they should have been for a band of poets. This was translation at its best. this was the way of the man. Now that is the most needed , wonderful Nat has left us. Let us keep his memory and his words with us lest he entirely lost. Such is too terrible to contemplate. Ave atque ale Nat.
